Dos2Mac needs system version 7.0 or greater to run
Why another text converter ?
I wanted one with the drag & drop feature, which runs nativ on PowerMac, and translates not only CR but also all possible chars like éàçèπ£... (we use those chars very often in French...). I found DosWasher 1.0 a shareware by N. Jonas Englund, it has the drag & drop feature, and works pretty well, except that it doesn't translate exotic chars, and wasn't optimised for PowerMac. So I decided to write my own program, I keept the simplicity of DosWasher, improved the speed, and added the chars conversion.
To convert a TEXT file (or as many as you want) you simply have to drag it (them) onto the Dos2Mac icon. The document(s) will automatically be converted to the opposite format (Mac files to Dos, and Dos files to Mac). Dos2mac checks every file before converting it, so you can mix DOS and Mac files in the same batch. Converting twice the same file is exactly the same as doing nothing, it can be usefull to 'undo' a conversion. The speed rate reachs 80Ko/s on my SE/30 and more than 300Ko/s (sometimes 600Ko/s) on my Powermac while converting a 300Ko TEXT file. The faster is your drive, the faster is the conversion...
I did my best to convert all possible chars, but some don't have any equivalent (as the DOS graphic chars...) so don't expect miracle if you use very special char. If Dos2Mac is so fast, it's because it use a lot of memory (at least the amount of the biggest file in the batch), but you don't have to increase the application memory in the 'Get info box', if it need more memory Dos2Mac will try to grab some in the free memory (i.e. memory which is not used by any application), if there's still not enough memory you will get a dialog box...
What's a PostcardWare ?
Dos2Mac 1.0 is released as a PostcardWare. This program is totally free, and there's no restrictions on distributing if as long as this Read Me file is included. All I want is a Postcard if you use it, you may indicate how you get it, if you like it, etc... . If you want an answer you can also add your E-mail (I can only answer you during school year). Your postcard will encourage me to write anothers softwares, and improve Dos2Mac. All suggestions are welcome.
Dos2Mac is provided as is, you can't expect any kind of warranty from me. Dos2mac was tested on my Powermac with system 7.5 and 7.5.1, and on my SE/30 running system 7.1 without problems. It was also tested on a friend powerBook, and Quadra. There shouldn't be some really big bugs, but if you find one do not hesitate to report it to me.
